Seastainable 2019 Jan - Mar Updates | S$4,963 for Conservation, Exciting Grant Projects, New Website & Seastainable Products!

Dear Seapporters,

We’ve reached the first quarter of the year (!!!) and we are super thrilled to share with you how your seapport has been making waves. From January to March, we were able to support and fund four projects in Singapore and Indonesia. Apart from this, we took a leap of faith and added an additional category to our product list - sustainable and ethical fashion for the modern woman looking to live a seastainable lifestyle. This is only the beginning of the year, and we’re not done. We’re constantly on the lookout for ways to channel your seapport for a better ocean, and we believe the good news is only going to keep coming.
Read through to sea an overview of what we’ve been up to the past three months:
Weaving Joyful Stories | Rags2Riches for Seastainable & Salty Seas Co.

We surely started the year off right! Back in Singapore, Seastainable was present in several pop-up locations namely: The Festival Walk in Tampines Hub, Earthfest in Marina Barrage, and the NUS Eco-Fest in NUS UTown. During our pop-ups, we gave a sneak peek of our new line of sustainable fashion products and more importantly, got a chance to meet our seapporters. 💙 If you’d like to stay updated on our future pop-ups, follow us on our social media handles.

Conservation Projects

We are thriled to see more projects sprouting that focus on educating citizens and building awareness on their vital role in marine conservation!

Through your seapport for Seastainable, we are pleased to have invested a total of $4,963 SGD in conservation projects for 2019 January to March and have continued to fund several conservation projects: three projects in Indonesia and one in Singapore! Meet the first few winners of our Seastainable Grant below:

Indonesia: Pongo Academy
The Pongo Academy is a project under the Pongo Ranger Community (PRC), an organization which focuses on youth empowerment and environmental education, especially wildlife protection in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This program is one of PRC’s environmental education platforms initiated in 2018. The objective of the Pongo Academy is to make the environmental education process more attractive with a public speaking workshop in relation to environmental education, training in negotiation, observation and education with the IAR Indonesia medical team regarding the rehabilitation process of orangutans, and the observation of organic farming. On the second day, participants get to join an outbound event located at the local beach.
Indonesia: Lamaholot Beach Cleanup
The Lamaholot Beach Clean-up (LBC) is a project led by Megi, who is an alternative livelihoods program officer for Misool Foundation in Lamakera, a small village located in the center of Indonesia and one of the centers of the global manta ray gill raker trade. The LBC is an educational outreach program for local youths in Larantuka and Solor Island, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The project consists of two initiatives: a beach clean-up, and an educational workshop for students, local stakeholders, and government officials. There were 57 volunteers who joined the clean up in Larantuka Island and 44 volunteers in Solor Island. During the clean-up of Solor island, the volunteers picked up a total of 84kgs of single-use plastics, 2.9kgs of metal cans, 21.4kgs of glass, and 489kgs of random material (cloth, diapers, tampons, etc.) within 400 meters.
Indonesia: Plastic Waste Management Plant

Having worked in various socio-environmental organisations and projects in Indonesia, ranging from World Vision Indonesia to Kolping Indonesia, Hananto became well aware of the issues that need grassroots attention. His experience from working in a variety of roles, from serving as the head of waste management, water & sanitation coordination, and public relations, has given him the know-how in launching his very own ambitious project – a plastic waste management plant in Southwest Sumba.

Until now, there has been no plastic waste management centre in Southwest Sumba. Locals are used to disposing of their plastic waste by burning, which is dangerous to the environment and to the community. With his initiative, Hananto aims to provide an environmentally sustainable method of handling plastic waste, provide jobs to the locals, and use the centre as an educational space to spread the message of good environmental stewardship to the community. Hananto has also been making eco-bricks with the local community that can be used to support building structures in the area.

At the moment, Hananto still requires a bit of help. Those who have the means to can help in the following ways:

1) Monetary support to fund the purchase of equipment for the recycling plant.
2) Glue donations for the production of ecobricks. He requires Acetic Silicone glue.

Singapore: Bye Bye Plastic Bags SG

Bye Bye Plastic Bags Singapore (BBPB SG) is part of the Bye Bye Plastic Bags movement. Originally started by 2 sisters in Bali, their main goal is to completely eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags through: educational materials online and offline, implementing structural changes and policies that would support this idea at a larger scale, hosting coastal clean-ups to emphasise the urgency of reducing our plastic consumption, doing research on local plastic bag consumption to gather statistics, working with businesses to raise awareness and implement change on a corporate level, and collaborating with other local plastic initiatives to create a larger impact and champion a more well-rounded, sustainable lifestyle for all.

BBPB SG executed several activities with your support through the Seastainable Grant. Early this month, they had a booth at Ground Up Initiative Farmers’ Market on March 16 and conducted their second community Beach Cleanup in Sembawang Beach last March 24.
